I went camping at a really fantastic spot this weekend.

Here in New Mexico there's a place called Water Canyon near the city of Magdalena, in the Cibola National Forest.

It's quite a place, especially if you venture on past the official camp sites down the less maintained road. There's a spot where you can set up camp right next to a stream, complete with a little waterfall.

It's very nice.

We got a lot of corn today

Today we got a whole lot of corn for almost nothing! There was a sale on corn where we got some really good sweet corn 10 ears for a dollar. You could only get one per person though, so I got some Friday and we went back and got two more bags of 10 today (1 each!)

I just husked, cut, tupperwared and froze all of it. It's a ton of corn, probably $20-40 if it were bought pre-frozen in bags.

So a pretty good deal, and a pleasant afternoon.

Last weekend we tore out all the shelves in our raggedy old basement. We didnt' take any pictures for some reason, but did get a lot of neat old lumber.

This weekend I used a lot of that old lumber to get a really solid start on a chicken coop. The whole thing is 3 feet by 8 feet, and 5 feet tall at the peak of the roof.

I put this together in about a day, and the total cost wound up being about $15 for 6 new 2x4s. I just didn't get any long pieces out of that basement.

I built a fancy version of my previous bamboo skewer knife block.

This one is made out of red oak instead of pine, and not only did it cost a lot more in lumber, it cost a lot more in time. The finish alone was hours of rubbing.

It was a wedding present though, and I hope it stays with them forever.

I finished working on the replacement trowel handle I started building a while back.

It's not as nice as I'd like to get it someday, but it gets the job done for now and is a pleasure to hold.

There's something deeply satisfying about repairing something when you could just as easily throw it away and buy a cheap crappy replacement.
